Inspiration
I love the virus shawl and wanted to make a modern version of it.
The name came about as the shawl was being pattern tested. The day after starting the test i became ill and was in hospital for two days. My lovely testers calmly got on with the shawl, and one lady shared a very moving and personal story as to how the shawl was helping her and what it meant to her.
Other ladies also shared their stories, and it became clear that this shawl needed a symbolic name. One of the pattern testers came up with Hope Springs, and it was perfect!

The pattern works up quickly with a memorable two row repeat.

This shawl pattern is flexible, you can work with one skein of 4 ply yarn plus scrap, stash yarn for the edging as shown, or with more yarn or different weight yarn for a bigger shawl.

Pattern is written out in both U.S. terms and U.K. terms, and is printer-friendly.

You Will Need
▸▹Use any 4ply or DK yarn for this project however you may need to adjust your hook to match tension (gauge) and you will need different quantities of yarn.

  • Yarn: MC 100g 4ply yarn, CC 15g 4 ply yarn for contrasting edge
  • 4.5mm hook or hook to achieve desired drape
  • Stitch marker Example alternatives: 1. MC 210g DK single ply merino, CC 17g DK merino 2.Scheepjes Whirl, MC pattern 195g, CC 10g

Tension
2.5 patt reps x 6 rows = 10cm over Row 6 patt when blocked

▸▹If wanting to replicate the design as shown, you will need to match the tension given. Change your hook size to match tension. Alternatively adjust the pattern to work more or less rows before the edging.

Size
160cm (63 inches) across top, 70cm (27.5 inches) from top to centre tip if using same yarn as patt.
(Scheepjes Whirl length from centre to tip = 88cm, width tip to tip 214cm)

Construction
Work from the top down, increasing at the beginning, centre, and end of rows. Turn your work at the end of each row.

Yarn Used
The sample is made using my own hand dyed yarn, available for a limited run of 6 skeins from my etsy shop.

Hope Springs has been pattern tested by both experienced and beginner pattern testers.
