This hat is inspired by the one worn by Alex Cross in episode 1.3 of the TV Show Cross, which is based on the Alex Cross novels by James Patterson. The cables create a compressed stitch pattern, so it uses a lot of yarn (for a hat) and is very warm and very stretchy. It features a folded cabled cuff that matches the cables on the rise of the hat.

This hat isn’t an exact copy of Detective Cross’s hat; rather, it refines the original design slightly so that the crown is rounded instead of pointy; it adds two fold rounds for a cleaner break between cuff and rise, and it simplifies certain elements to make it easier to memorize which will make it faster and easier to knit.

It provides three sizes and some basic guidance should you want to adjust the size further, both in circumference and height.

Cables patterns compress the stitch count, so this pattern calls for a lot of yarn (for a hat). The medium (which will fit most adults) calls for approximately 1.5 skeins of yarn. Two skeins should be enough for a large, but there is some chance you might need a third for a very large hat - choose a yarn you can get more of in that case.
