Gauge: with size US 11 needles and one strand of worsted weight yarn, cast on (knit on, long-tail or double cast on methods recommended) 24 and work in (k 3, p 3) ribbing for 24 rows:
14.5 stitches and 19 rows = 4 inches

This textured scarf has some tricky decreases and increases. (Photo tutorials for the very unusual increases are included in the pattern.) They are fiddly but when you are finished, it looks like it would be impossible to have made it by just knitting from one end to the other. These unusual stitches are well worth the effort because they allow you to proceed directly from end to end: no provisional cast on, no picking up stitches along an edge, no grafting … the only finishing is to work in a few ends.

The instructions include both abbreviated row by row and fully charted formats in a layout that allows easy printing of only the format you want to use.
