This flat tapestry crochet design was adapted from an ancient Roman mosaic found in a villa at Pompeii. You can see the original mosaic here. I’ve been in love with Rome for a long time (I majored in Classics in college) and got to visit Pompeii myself back in 2007. It was an amazing trip!

Depending on the yarn you choose, this piece could be a blanket, a large rug, or even a wall hanging. Enjoy the décor of a Roman millionaire at a fraction of the cost!

The difficulty of this pattern is advanced beginner: you will need to be familiar with the tapestry crochet technique. Only basic stitches are used.

You can use yarn of any weight and fiber you like, depending on how big you want your finished piece to be. My end product was 35x50” (89x127cm), at a gauge of 29 stitches and 30 rows per 4 inches in tapestry single crochet after blocking. More important than gauge is keeping your stitches tight and consistent.

Here are the materials I used.

  • Sport-weight yarn in two colors:
  1. About 2100 yards / 1900 meters in Color A (background color), excluding any extra for tassels or fringe. I used Hobbii Twister Solid in Natural White
  2. About 1200 yards / 1100 meters in Color B (pattern color). I used Hobbii Twister in Jungle. This amount is just a little more than one cake. You could use one cake of Twister plus one cake of Twister Solid matching the final color of your Twister.
  • 2.75 mm crochet hook

  • Stitch markers

  • Tapestry needle

  • Blocking materials
