This fun throw is modeled after the iconic Hudson’s Bay Pointe Blanket. I started it at the beginning of what turned out to be a very long, cold, and snowy winter in the mid-Atlantic and finished while watching the 2014 Winter Olympic Games that was held in Sochi, Russia. The fact that the colors of the throw matches the Olympic colorway is a happy coincidence.

This throw is knitted in the double-knitting method in which two layers of fabric are knitted at the same time on one pair of straight needles or one circular needle. Double-knitting is usually used in constructing contrasting color works on both sides of the fabric. Hudson Meets Sochi, however, consists of horizontal stripes that are the same on both sides, therefore is much simpler to knit than contrasting color works because you only need to carry one strand of yarn at any given time. So this is a great fun way to try out a new knitting method the easy way.

Hudson meets Sochi:

  • is knitted in the double-knitting method;
  • is double-layered;
  • has non-curling edges;
  • won’t stretch out as easily as single-layered knits;
  • is extra warm;
  • can easily be adapted to different sizes;
  • can be knitted in your team or school colors;
  • is great for stash-bashing!

This is a BIG project and will not be quite portable after around the half-way point. So gather your stash, brace yourself and settle in.

I suggest you to search for any video tutorial online to familiarize yourself with this technique before you delve right in.
