Inspired by the Hudson River, this 2-color crescent shawl combines the texture of seed stitch with a dash of colorwork to keep it interesting. (A striped variation is also included, to knit in place of the colorwork section.) This shawl has a fluid drape that looks lovely tied in front. Most of the shawl can be knitted with minimal concentration, but the colorwork and the bind-off will require a bit more focus.

Construction: This shawl uses a garter tab cast-on and is then worked down and out from the top center, with increases on the outer edges of each row. The main stitch used is seed stitch; this alternates with a stockinette section in the middle that also is where the colorwork (or striping) occurs. The two yarn colors should contrast with each other to best show off the colorwork and bind-off. The bind-off is simple enough but requires focus (uses a combination of p2tog and k2tog with the yarn moved back and forth).

Finished Size: One size of 48.5 inches (123 cm) wingspan / 15 inches (38 cm) center depth/length, but depending on the yarn you use and its stretchiness, the wingspan may be slightly smaller or larger.

Yarn Requirements (approx. 190 yards of Yarn A and 225 yards of Yarn B; samples shown use the following):

• (speckly + solid bright blue) Long Dog Yarn Everyday DK in (A) “221B Baker St.” and (B) “Twilight.”
• (light speckly + gray-blue) Tosh DK in (A) “Stormborn” and (B) “Hudson River Blue.”
• (bright pink + gold) Tosh DK in (A) “Cactus Flower” and (B) “Candlewick.”
• (striped = variegated + variegated teal/black) Martin’s Lab Comfy DK in (A) “Navajo” and (B) “Dragonfish.”

Needles: US size 7 / 4.5 mm (24” / 60 cm long) circular needles.

Gauge: Gauge is not crucial to this pattern, but it will affect yarn usage and how aggressively you may want to block your shawl, so I recommend knitting a gauge swatch: 16 sts / 20 rows = 4” (10 cm) square in stockinette.

Colorwork OR Stripes: To achieve the wavy colorwork in this shawl’s middle section, you will need to carry yarns across and purl the colorwork on the wrong side for 4 rows. It is challenging but is doable if you take your time. Alternatively, you can follow the striped variation directions (see bottom two photos).
