Once upon a time, I ordered four skeins of Nightshades to treat myself to a selfish knitting project—no really! I thought I could combine them in one of the many, many patterns in my Ravelry queue. But once they arrived, designer brain took over. I’d been daydreaming about a cozy garter stitch cardigan and brainstorming about how to make a project in such a simple stitch stand out. With these four moody shades in hand, it became clear—fade these subtle colors together, working from a center point. Many sketches and diagrams later, Humo Amargo was born. It’s worked side-to-side, beginning from a provisional cast-on at the spine. The colors transition as you work from the center back around to the fronts, which are left open and trimmed with a tidy i-cord. Two Latvian braids run down the spine and are mimicked with a column of slipped stitches down each sleeve to pull the whole design together. The result is akin to comfort food in a handknit: a squishy, easy fit sweater that will keep you snug and warm year-round.
