For Hungarian Horntail you need two contrasting yarns of the same weight: two solids, one solid or semi solid combined with a color gradient, or two color gradients that go well together as a pair but that are distinctive enough to make out the individual modules – all these ensembles will do. The exact amount of yarn you need will of course depend on the tightness of your knitting and the weight of your yarn. I used fingering weight and knitted two models with 2.5 mm needles and one with 2.75 mm needles. One ball of 440y/400m for Yarn A and two balls of 660y/600m of Yarn B were enough. If you want to knit with thicker needles or if your stitches are looser you might need more yarn and the shawl will be accordingly bigger.
I knitted one model with Picktheyarn Auturu (depth 17”/43cm - wingspan 80”/203cm) and I used 440y/400m of a solid navy color as Yarn A and 2 balls of 660y/600m of Alpha Centauri as Yarn B.
I knitted another model with Schoppel Zauberperlen, Samsara. (depth 16”/41cm - wingspan 86”/220cm) I used the darkest hue as Yarn A and the other hues as Yarn B. The yarn is lovely soft and wonderful to knit with, but I recommend to use a different yarn as Yarn A because I ended up buying 7 units of Zauberperlen because I ran out of that particular color. Otherwise I would have needed only 4 units plus 440y/400m of another yarn.
I also knitted one version combining Wollmeise Pure Taube (440y/400m) as Yarn A with Wollelfe Peacock (660y/600m) as Yarn B for the first half and Wollmeise Pure Oomph (660y/600m as Yarn B for the second half (depth 17”/43cm - wingspan 86”/220cm).
Hungarian Horntail is a modular knit but there is no seaming involved as you will join all the modules as you go. You will find photo tutorials on all the necessary techniques. All instructions are given in written and charted form. Since the charts are very large you will find the charted and written instructions in two separate files.
Happy Knitting!
