Hungarian Rose
This pattern has been updated! It now comes in two sizes with full color charts for both hands, expanded instructions, larger charts, and mini-photo tutorials for the embroidery stitches.
These fingerless mitts were inspired by the fabulous folk art and textile traditions of Eastern Europe and have a floral theme. The borders are taken directly from cross-stitch patterns that were brought to Hungary by Saxon immigrants in the 12th century, and can still be found decorating clothing and homewares today. It is most typical to find them worked in a single color, like red, black or blue on a white background, but knitted in white on a light background they resemble lace. The center panel is inspired by the lush, satin-stitch floral embroideries that the folk art of Eastern Europe is so well known for. The palm pattern is similar to the embroidery done on garment seams for strength and durability as well as beauty, and found in the textiles of this region as well as those of many other cultures. These mitts have gusseted thumbs and ribbed edges for a comfortable fit, and a few simple embroidered stitches (French knots and duplicate stitch) make the flowers “pop.”
These mitts are knit from the bottom up in stranded stockinette, with 2 x 2 ribbed edgings. They have a gusseted thumb and are finished off with just a few stitches of embroidery (duplicate stitch and French knots). They are knitted in the round and can be knit on double points, two circulars or with the Magic Loop method, according to your preference. Any fingering or sock weight yarn can be used, and since they use small amounts of several colors, they’re a great project for leftovers. Two sizes are given, and sizing can be further adjusted by gauge. Full charts for colorwork are given for both sizes, with both right and left hand charts for each size.
