Huppeldepup Hat
A certain challenge brought me to the idea of switching a sock stitch pattern into a hat pattern. It’s a really easy stitch pattern that I enjoyed, with a lot of texture. That was also a part of the challenge, to make a textured hat. So my hat is knit from the top center down, starting with only 4 stitches. The pretty texture is formed because it is knit mostly with purl stitches, but it’s also very simple to reverse that. In fact, if the hat is worn inside out it becomes a totally different hat that is just as cute. So knit it the way you prefer and wear it the way you like best!
As for the name, “huppeldepup” is a Dutch word which is used similar to the English word “thingamabob”. It was one of my favorite words when I was learning the Dutch language ;-)
Size
Two sizes are possible, average child’s size head and a larger size. You can make it bigger or smaller by choosing different needles and/or yarn. When laying flat, my finished size was 7,5”/19 cm long from top centre to bottom edge of the ribbing, and at the ribbing it was 7”/18cm wide.
Yarn
Anything DK or worsted weight that works and looks nice with US 8/ 5mm needles. Thinner yarn will result in a smaller hat. I used worsted weight yarn, 41 grams, which was about 90 m/95 yards.
Worsted - 80% Acrylic, 20% Wool - 110 meters / 50 grams
Needles
Size US 8 (5 mm) & US 6 (4 mm): 24” circular or longer or best size to match your yarn
Notions
6(7) markers, tapestry needle
Gauge (Optional)
24 sts and 34 rows = 4” 10 cm in St st after wet blocking.
Pattern Notes
This pattern is worked in the round from the top down.
The increases in the center top section are made by doing yo’s in one row and purling them twisted in the next row. (ptbl)
Should you chose to knit the hat “inside out” then you will need to knit the yo’s through the back loop. (ktbl), all purl stitches will be knit stitches and the two decreases in the stitch pattern will be worked purlwise.
The textured stitch pattern is charted only.
