In the era of the e-book, there are some folks who still use bookmarks. My sweetie is always looking for an extra one so, what started out as a random swatching session turned into a “just because” gift for her.

This is a great stashbuster if you’ve got bits of laceweight yarn leftover from other projects. You need a small amount - I used 5 grams in total, including fringes.

The stitch pattern is called the Hurdle Stitch. I found it on Pinterest a while back and had been wanting to try it in some swatches to see how it looked in different weights of yarn. I never got past my first swatch, which grew into a bookmark!

My suggestion would be to use a laceweight yarn with some body. I used a BFL yarn that I purchased from Smashknits. It was one of two yarns I combined for my Eye of the Storm Shawl project. You want a yarn that won’t hide the stitch texture so stay away from mohair type yarns for this.

The finished dimensions of my bookmark (not including fringes) was 1 7/8 inches wide by 10 inches long or about 4.5 cm wide and 25 cm long. You can make yours wider by adding multiples of two stitches, or make it longer or shorter by adding or subtracting pattern repeats.

This is a simple stitch pattern. Despite the small gauge, it knits up quickly and would make a great little portable project as the pattern is simple to remember and so little yarn is needed.
