Construction Notes:
I like to call one-color brioche the garter stitch of brioche knitting! When you knit it flat, you are only ever “brk-ing” (brioche knitting), even on the contrast side of the fabric, so it pairs perfectly with garter stitch lace. You may perhaps recognize this diamond stitch pattern. It is seriously one of my favorites… well, besides brioche, of course! It is the same stitch pattern used in the crown shaping of Hint Hint (pattern from Brioche Knitting for Beginners and Beyond), as well as my Ahsoka shawl pattern. This pattern does have a brioche increase, but it is the smallest one, and hopefully will help you learn this technique. One-color brioche repeated over and over is such a fantastic way to learn. It’s how I learned, actually! It’s a great way to teach your hands the muscle memory without having to worry about multiple strands of yarn. Melissa of Plank and Stella created this custom colorway especially for the pattern. I wanted her amazing sense of color and subtle speckles, maybe some pinks (because pink is my favorite). Think about your favorite color and maybe a bit of speckles when you’re choosing yarn for this project! This is a pleasing canvas to play with variegation and coloration!
This symmetrical triangle shawl is knit from the bottom up, beginning with the lowest point and working up to the top border. You will begin with a garter lace diamond medallion motif, which will continue along both edges as the shawl grows. But as it grows, a one-color brioche center will be gradually added in, increasing in width until you get to the top border. Adorning the top will be more of the diamonds that you worked along the edges.
My favorite way to wear this shawl is wrapped around my neck, kerchief-style. It’s also a great size for wrapping around your shoulders for extra warmth!
