This chute is both decorative and practical—perfect for a little extra warmth around the neck, it can be pulled up over your face for additional warmth in biting winds. Stranded colorwork provides structure and warmth in addition to eye-catching design.

“Huso” is the family farm from which my great grandmother Guri immigrated to the United States from the Hallingdal valley in Norway. While the charts for this pattern are not unique or typical to the area, bold colorful designs are the hallmark of fabrics, woven and knit, from historical Hallingdal.

Two sizes: due to varying stitch counts, one of the charts in the design is presented slightly differently for each of the two sizes.

Difficulty level: Advanced due to color work, but a good beginner project due to the relatively short floats and use of only two colors at a time.

Additional notes on yarn: as a general rule, the S/M size will use less than half a 100g skein of sock yarn for each of the two colors and the L/XL size will will use less than half a skein for the CC and slightly more than half a skein for the MC-- so if you inverted the colors for MC and CC, you should be able to get 2 chutes out of two 100 g skeins of sock yarn. Of course gauge and needle size may affect this.

Time-to-knit estimate: For someone experienced in color work, it knits up more quickly than a pair of socks as the structure is so simple and it uses less yarn.
