Hyacinth Bucket hat
The Hyacinth Bucket hat is knitted in linen stitch from top down towards the brim. The hat is knitted using bulky weight yarn in a tight gauge to get the bucket hat shape to hold. The size of the hat and length of the brim are easily adjustable and options are given for modifying the fit.
Choose a cotton, viscose or linen blend yarn or other non-stretchy fibers for the best result. You can weave a piece of metallic wire around the brim at the end to keep it stiffer and this way it will also keep its shape better.
Size
One size, women’s medium. The size of the hat and length of the brim are easily adjustable.
To fit head circumference: 53-58.5 cm / 21-23 inches
Needles
3.5 mm / US 4 DPNs or circular needle for Magic Loop knitting for the top of the hat
3.5 mm / US 4 circular needle with a cable of 40 cm / 16” for the main part
3.5 mm / US 4 circular needle with a cable of 80 cm / 32” for the brim
Gauge
23 sts and 44 rounds = 10 cm over linen stitch in the round after blocking. Always use the needle size that gives you the right gauge!
Note about the gauge: The linen stitch pattern should be quite stiff for the hat to stay in shape, so use smaller needles than you would usually use for this type of yarn.
