Hybrid is a hat pattern that combines the best attributes of the beanie and slouchy style hats. I created this pattern to have the sleeker outline of the beanie hat, but the more comfortable fit of the slouchy style-- less itch and hat hair than a typical beanie style hat!

The pattern is written to produce a hat with a 20” (50.8 cm) that will stretch to fit heads up to 22-24” (53.34-58.42 cm), although the basic 2 stitch repeat makes it easy to add or subtract stitches (in multiples of 2). The amount of rows knit may need adjusted (in multiples of 4 to fit the repeat) to make the depth of the hat fit the new circumference.

It can be tricky to measure the rows accurately in the gauge swatch, but the stitches (width) is really the only important measurement for this hat. Additional rows can be knit at the end to reach desired depth before the decrease section.

This hat can be knit with 1 skein of heavy DK or light worsted weight yarn. I used Malabrigo Yarn Rios and absolutely love the knitted fabric this pattern creates. A few test knitters tried the hat with a heavier worsted weight and the fabric became too dense and not as stretchy, so this pattern is best for a lighter worsted weight or heavy DK weight.

Needles:
US 5 (3.75mm) 16” circular needles or DPNs
US 7 (4.5mm) 16” circular needles or DPNs AND 30” (or longer) circulars for magic loop during decrease section OR DPNs.
