HYPE Hat
I am so HYPE for this hat! This pattern was one part passion, one part necessity. Driving across icy roads on a gray day in December, with no cell service, I turned to a bright, speckled skein tucked in by the sandwiches and extra mittens in our bag. I knitted on this fine skein for a little. Watching my kid Alpine Ski race and freezing my buns off, I dreamt up a soft, double-brimmed hat to keep my ears warm. On the way home, I knitted feverishly and into the dark on the first version of this hat. The color chased away the gray day but I wanted this hat to be EXTRA. And I wanted a slightly denser fabric. When we got home, I snagged a skein of soft, lace weight yarn to hold together with the fingering weight that I’d been using. I ripped back and started again. Sparks FLEW! The halo! The squish!
Sizing
Designed to fit Adult S (Adult M, Adult L). Recommended 2.5” / 6.25 cm negative ease for a snug fit.
Finished Measurements
Approximately 18.5 (19.75, 21)” / 47 (50, 53) cm circumference and 8.25 (8.75, 9.5)” / 21 (22.25, 24) cm tall (measurements are post-blocking and unstretched).
Yarn (strands held together)
1 Skein: La Bien Aimée Merino Singles Fingering weight (100% Superwashed Merino Wool; 400 yd/ 366 m per 100 g). Shown in: Tang (pink and orange speckle).
1 Skein: The Farmer’s Daughter Fibers Mighty Mo Lace weight (70% Kid Mohair/ 30% Silk; 459 yd/ 420 m per 50 g). Shown in: Honkey Tonkin’ (pink and purple speckle).
** For the grey sample, I used “Pop Grunge” in Merino Singles from LBA plus Mighty Mo from the Farmer’s Daughter but I’m not totally sure which colorway. I think that it was “Whiskey Butte” (cream with brownish/mauve speckles)
OR Fingering Weight 224 (246, 271) yd / 205 (225, 248) m held together with Lace Weight 258 (284, 312) yd / 236 (266, 285) m
Note: These yarn amounts are estimates. Any changes that knitters make to gauge or the hat’s measurements will change the amount of yarn you’ll need.
Gauge 26 stitches and 31 rounds = 4” / 10 cm in 1 x 1 in the Broken Rib Stitch worked in the round on gauge needles, after blocking.
Suggested Needles*
US Size 3 / 3.25 mm circular, 16” / 40 cm length for the hat’s brim; alternatively, one longer circular needle for Magic Loop.
