This sock is worked toe up. A separate top down pattern is also available. These patterns are each available individually or as a set.

Hyperion is a close relative of Polar Arc, my sock construction that is worked entirely in the round yet still has a lovingly contoured fit even for high arches. A discount is applied if you buy both patterns, or if you have already bought Polar Arc.

The pictured pair is made with Freia Fibers Solemates in Vamp. Each sock is worked from both ends of the same cake.

I have made many socks using self striping yarn, and I love watching the pattern emerge as I knit. Hyperion is not worked with striping yarn, although its design is inspired by it. This pattern uses a color map system that anchors the striping design at the heel and instep. This stripe placement on this unique sock construction evokes a feeling of concentric circles, so I named the pattern after one of Saturn’s moons.

Finished sock circumferences range from 6.5 to 10 inches. Sizes S(M, L, XL) each have their own pattern file, with an additional file devoted to 4 half sizes. There is also a mod available for working a taller leg. Sample pictured uses this mod.

Note that in the toe up pattern, the beginning of the sock is worked in 1 color and striping starts at the Arch. Because foot length is variable, I can’t design a stripe sequence that starts at the toe and lands in a specific place on the heel (see note below). It can be done, but must be worked out by the individual knitter. When I make my own socks, I plan ahead to figure out how many rounds my toe and foot will be, and then I extend the stripe sequence all the way down to the cast on row.

If you would like help figuring out how to work out your own toe and foot striping sequence, please feel free to ask me about it. Or just mess around and do anything you like here!

  • With top down this is not an issue, because by the time you get to the foot and toe you have already worked the sequence over the heel.
