Part of a collaboration with Marissa of Fantasy Fibers Yarn Co. for her Fourth Wing themed New Year’s Eve Box as we enter 2025, this sock pattern was designed to look like dragon scales under a shroud of lightning bolts. The lightning colorwork found at the cuff has a high contrast with a main color, but you may choose any amount of contrast to achieve this effect if you want it to be more subtle! The dragon scale fabric works best with a low-contrast main colorway, so that the nuances of the texture are not lost in a highly variegated yarn. The corrugated ribbing and lightning colorwork are entirely optional, if you’d like to omit these details!

These socks are knit starting at the cuff, and working downward toward the toes. The cuff ribbing finishes with a subtle eyelet detail to form a sharp lightning peak before heading into the lightning colorwork, and then the dragon scales, both are which are given in charts. The heel is worked using the heel flap method. The instructions are written to accommodate the magic loop method for small circumferences, but they are easily adapted to using other methods if preferred.

Sizes: finished foot circumference of 7 (8, 9) inches, or 17.75 (20.25, 23) cm

• This measurement is taken around the widest part of your foot

• Recommended ease: up to you! If you prefer socks with a looser fit you may size up if you are between sizes, but if you like a more snug fit then size down! Alternatively, you can adjust your needle size to fine tune the sizing a bit more – sock sizing is very versatile!

Needles:

• Size US 1.5 / 2.5 mm DPNs or long circular needles for magic loop

Yarn: fingering weight yarn in one or two colors:

• MC: 300 (330, 360) yards, or 275 (300, 330) meters

• CC: 20 (25, 30) yards, or 18 (23, 27) meters – for corrugated ribbing, and colorwork at the cuff; optional

Gauge: 32 sts x 40 rows = 4” x 4” Dragon Scale Motif, worked flat on size US 1.5 / 2.5 mm needles and blocked
