I love Alsace Socks
This pair of socks shows some symbols from my little corner of the world, Alsace, with stranded colorwork all around the leg. Over the instep of the foot there is a textured pattern. It has a heel flap and wide toe. Construction instructions are written, textured pattern is both written and charted, colorwork is charted only.
Skill level: intermediate.
Techniques: knit/purl in the round and flat, stranded colorwork, picking up stitches, short rows, grafting stitches.
Yarn: Main color: 300 yards of fingering weight sock yarn.
Contrasting color: 100 yards of fingering weight sock yarn.
The sample has been knitted in Ofil bébé and Katia Peques. Any colors will work fine but you should make sure there is enough contrast between your two colors.
In doubt a good way to know if you have nicely contrasting colors is to take a picture of your yarn balls side by side, turn the photo into black and white and check if your greys are recognizable.
Gauge:
Size small / medium: 36 stitches x 48 rows = 4” in stockinette - size US 1 / 2.25 mm needles
Size medium / large: 32 stitches x 44 rows = 4” in stockinette - size US 2 / 2.75 mm needles
Note: stranded colorwork is tighter than stockinette, if you usually work with 64 stitches in stockinette you will need the 72 stitches with the same needle size to make your sock fit!
Tools: Size US 1 / 2.25 mm or US 2 / 2.75 mm set of 5 DPNs or long circular needle for magic loop (or size to get gauge); tapestry needle; scissors; 2 stitch markers.
