One of my secret wish is to stick out my tongue and catch a falling snowflake from the sky on my tongue. It must be like eating tiny stars of joy! Lol, now it is no more a secret. I live in Mumbai and we’ve never experienced snow. So this wish is on my “To do” list for the time being.

“I Love You Snowflake” is my 3rd in series of snowflakes inspired by science. Yes, this snowflake resemblance a real snowflake of water which is charged with the emotion, “I Love You” just like this crochet snowflake is charged by me with the very same emotion.

A few years ago, I saw the movie, “The Secret”. In that movie was a part where a scientist named Dr. Masaru Emoto showed the effects of different positive and negative thoughts on water. He infused and expressed water with different thoughts, emotions, feelings, music, spoken words, typed words, pictures and videos. He, then crystallized the water or you can say, made it into snowflakes.

After he crystallized it, he observed it under a microscope and took magnified pictures of it. Each positive feeling/ thing created different beautiful shapes which were unique to that feeling/ thing.

Each negative emotion created a unique distorted crystal too but even from the looks of it, it was seen that each were badly formed. 60% of our body is water. If thoughts can do that to water, imagine what our thoughts can do to us.

I have been so inspired to use that experiment myself since then. However since, my scientific equipment is limited, I resorted to the best equipment I have at hand, my crochet hook and yarn.

This applique is very easy and can be made in just a short time. It is perfect to use as an embellishment or as a last minute Christmas ornament.

Materials:

Suggested Yarns:
I used a size 10 weight thread and size 1.75mm crochet steel hook to make the smaller applique. I used approximately 23-25 yards of which is Lotus International (India) Red Rose Stranded Cotton which is an embroidery floss.

I used an Aran weight yarn and size 4mm crochet hook to make the larger applique. I used approximately 21-23 yards of Red Heart Super Saver yarn.

I Used:
For the smaller snowflake:
1) Lotus International (India) Red Rose Stranded Cotton(100% Cotton; 42 yds38m/0.35 oz 10 g; CYCA # 0): #White, 1 ball.

For the larger snowflake:
1) Red Heart Super Saver(100% Acrylic; 364 yds333 m/6.98 oz 198 gm; CYCA #4): #1 White, 1 skein.

Crochet Hook Size:
For the smaller snowflake:
1.75 mm/ US 00 size crochet steel hook or size needed to obtain gauge.

For the larger snowflake:
4 mm/ US G size crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge.

Notions:
Stitch Marker(S)
Sewing Needle
Scissors
Fabric Stiffener/ White Glue/ Mod Podge

Gauge:
Gauge is not important for this applique. You can make it big or small using a different yarn and hook.

For the smaller snowflake:
8 sc x 8 rows = 1” (2.54 cm) with 1.75mm(US 00) size crochet hook.

For the larger snowflake:
4 sc x 4 rows = 1” (2.54 cm) with 4mm crochet hook.

Finished sizes:
The smaller thread snowflake is 5” across.
The larger snowflake made with an Aran weight yarn is 8” across.
