I designed this pattern after a late winter snow was followed by an ice storm. Tiny ice pellets covered the ground and capped over the deep snow. When my kids walked over the ice, it crunched and broke through to the powdery snow below, leaving hollow holes on the surface. The contrasts of hard and soft, multiple icy textures and footprint motives game me the inspiration for this hat.

This hat is knit with fingering weight yarn using a seed stitch pattern and large yarnover eyelets. This creates a visually appealing, lightweight hat perfect for spring, fall or cooler days without the bulkiness or added heat of a heavy yarn. The hat can be knit as shown, or additional rows may be added in the pattern to create a slouchier or oversized look. The instructions for both of these looks can be found within the pattern.

This hat uses roughly 180 yards of fingering weight yarn and is knit in the round on US size 2 needles. A 16 inch circular needle or double pointed needles are ideal.
