These top-down socks were inspired by an episode of the TV programme “Ice Road Truckers” in which one of the drivers made a journey to a remote village that could only be reached by driving along a frozen river. A garter stitch “river” winds its way between banks made using simple increases and decreases as it flows down the sock from the cuff towards the toe. A gusset is included to increase the depth of the short-row heel, formed using German short-rows (although you could substitute the short row method of your choice).

The pattern is based on a stitch tension of 9 sts per inch (2.5cm) worked in stocking stitch.

The pattern is given in two sizes, Small/Medium (8”/20cm foot circumference) and Medium/Large (9”/23cm foot circumference).

You will need:
Up to 400 yards (366m) fingering weight sock yarn
2mm (US 0) knitting needles for working in the round, or size needed to achieve pattern tension.
6 stitch markers
Darning needle

You will need to be able to: work in the round, work basic increases and decreases, follow a chart (the river pattern is charted only), graft using Kitchener stitch. Experience of German short-rows will help but they are explained briefly in the pattern.
