Lettuce is generally referred to as bunny food in my household, and everyone is required to hop once around the table before and after eating it. The lettuce itself is barely tolerated, but being allowed to make your parents pretend to be rabbits is usually enough incentive to get my toddler to eat it.

In order to get him to play with lettuce (and because stash diving didn’t yield any yarn the right color) I let him dye his own yarn using a mixture of food colors. He had fun dipping in bits of yarn and then adding a bit more yellow or blue until he found a shade he was happy with. The yarn we used for this started off as the same cream colored yarn that I used for the lettuce stem.

This is also what I like to call a “felt in the mouth” toy -- if it’s intended for a child under 3 it will probably end up felting a bit as it’s played with. I like the way this looks, and when it gets dirty or seems uneven I just toss it in the washer. So while it’s a good project for using up scraps, make sure you know ahead of time how your yarn reacts to felting.
