Icing Socks
An excellent stash buster, the icing socks add a bit of sweet colorwork to your regular sock pattern. These socks are fun and highly customizable with color-blocked sections throughout and utilizing optional popcorn stitches for texture.
Sizes S (M, L) are for 7” (8”, 9”) (18, 20, 23 cm) circumference socks. These socks are intended to use 0.5-1” (1.3-2.5 cm) of negative ease. Measure around the ball of the foot or the widest part of the leg that the sock will need to cover.
Yarn requirements:
Short socks:
Color A: 100 (110, 130) Yards
Color B: 25 (30, 35) Yards
Color C: 45 (60, 100) Yards
Long socks:
Color A: 120 (160, 190) Yards
Color B: 35 (40, 50) Yards
Color C: 100 (120, 160) Yards
These yarn requirements are a guide, however, due to the highly customizable nature of these socks, you may need more or less of a given color. If you’re doing all three colors, no color will need more than one standard skein of sock yarn.
These socks are a great way to use up bits and bobs of leftover sock yarn. Examples are shown using Knit Picks Stroll Fingering weight yarn, but many sock yarns were used successfully in testing.
Needles:
US size #1 (2.25 mm) Needles, or needles needed to get gauge. Sizing up needles may be helpful for the colorwork section. Pattern is written for the magic loop method, but any method can be used.
Gauge:
40 st x 10 centimeters stockinette in the round.
Notions:
Scissors, 3 removable stitch markers, a tapestry needle, a small crochet hook may be useful for picking up stitches.
Accessibility
This pattern offers two versions: the Icing Socks pattern, as well as a large print version. The large print version also includes complete written instructions of the colorwork chart by row. In both versions, the colorwork chart is shown in greyscale and was tested with the Coblis —
Color Blindness Simulator for accuracy. Please contact me (Allison) if further updates are needed.
