IJE AWELE is a beautifully textured crochet cardigan with a gorgeous wave-patterned dramatic shawl collar. It’s a classic drop shoulder and features a sideways construction.

Ije Awele is an Igbo word which means safe journey. The gorgeous wave-patterned shawl collar makes you think ocean, sea, and waves.

Ije Awele is dramatic but she’s got class; pretty yet still elegant. She’s all those adjectives that describe a piece that would never hit the wardrobe floor.

Ije Awele encourages you to be brave as you cruise through this journey called life.

Safe journey!

CONSTRUCTION
The cardigan is made by first crocheting three (3) rectangular panels: the back panel, two identical front panels.
The three (3) panels are then joined to form one body panel at the sides and then the shoulders. The sleeves are crocheted attached from one side of the underarm to the other in flat rows, with short-rows being used to shape and finally joined.
The shawl collar is worked in two halves and seamed at the back of the neck.

YARN REQUIREMENTS
YARN: Fingering weight yarn (size 1)
Approx 2183 (2343, 2556, 2869, 3161) (3535, 3848, 4261, 4532) m / 2387 (2563, 2795, 3138, 3458) (3866, 4208, 4660, 4958) yds for a cropped cardigan.
Approx 2532 (2718, 2965, 3328, 3667) (4101, 4464, 4943, 5257) m / 2769 (2972, 3242, 3640, 4010) (4484, 4882, 5405, 5749) yds for a full-length cardigan.

I used School Knits, a 100% acrylic fingering weight yarn in the colour sky blue. You can substitute with any other fingering weight yarn as long as gauge is met.

GAUGE, HOOKS AND NOTIONS
Gauge// 24 sts and 22 rows in (slst in 1 st, hdc in 1 st) stitch pattern is in 4”/10 cm using 4 mm hook.

Recommended hook// 4 mm hook.

Notions// Stitch markers and a tapestry needle.
For gauge, the stitch pattern shrinks up a bit but is very stretchy. As long as you can achieve the stitch gauge while gently stretching the swatch, that is good enough!

All together I provided 4 video tutorials as audiovisual aid to go with this pattern. I recommend you watch all before starting.
