You clutch the yarn-of-knitting to your chest. This +1 magical item is the only one of its kind. Your party risked life and limb to claim it from the Dark Wizard’s tower. Now, just as you thought you had escaped with your treasure, a final guardian stands between you and the completion of your quest!
This fabulously reversible cardigan is worked top down using double knitting and garter rows (see note at the bottom of the pattern page about substituting stranded colorwork for double knitting if desired). Double knitting eliminates the need to manage your floats, and makes a delightfully stretchy, double thick, extra squishy fabric. The dice motifs, based on classic Dungeons & Dragons dice sets, are a subtle way to show your nerd cred wherever you go. The body and sleeves of the sweater are worked in simple garter and slip stitch panels that make for an overall easy and relaxing knit. The body features optional afterthought pockets, and the collar/button band can be worked with or without short row waist shaping.
Don’t you think you deserve to roll up to you next game in a sweater that will be the envy of everyone at the table? Embrace your destiny as an RPG fashion icon, and roll for iKnitiative!
Yarn
Sport or DK weight yarn (approximately 320-340 yards/100grams). Sample shown was knit in Lattes & Llamas Geek-A-Long yarn (328y/100g) in colors Baskerville (Cream, 1), Frost Giant (Pale Blue, 2), Daily Planet (Bright Blue, 3), Tesseract (Medium Blue, 4), and Stars Hollow (Navy, 5).
Yards needed by color:
- 505(535, 560, 590, 620) 685(755, 825, 910, 1000)

- 275(290, 305, 320, 335) 370(410, 445, 490, 540)
- 230(240, 255, 265, 280) 310(340, 375, 415, 460)
- 620(655, 690, 725, 760) 835(920, 1015, 1120, 1235)
Needles
US5 32”-40” Circular Needles or size needed to obtain gauge. Choose a needle length that will be comfortable for working the full amount of yoke sts for your size.
US3 16” & 32”-40” Circular Needles or size needed to obtain gauge. 16” is used for the sleeves, which are worked in the round. DPNs can be substituted if preferred.
Gauge
26 sts and 32 rounds = 4” in Double Knitting on larger needles and garter rows on smaller needles. Gauge should be taken on a flat swatch worked in both garter (on larger needles) and double knitting (on smaller needles). Gauge for garter rows worked on the larger needles should match the gauge for the double knit worked on smaller needles. You may need to adjust 1 or both of your needle sizes to obtain gauge.
Designer note: You don’t have to use double knitting on the yoke, if you’d really rather not. I think it adds something special to the sweater, but this sweater is YOURS so it doesn’t actually matter what I like. Follow your muse! If you decide to forgo the double knitting and instead choose to work the yoke charts in stranded knitting, you can proceed as written, however, instead of working the 2 set up rows you will simply K 2 rows. Similarly, on the set up rows after the charts, simply K2 rows with the background color and move on. Note that if you are doing this it is important that you swatched in stranded knitting and garter rows, rather than in double knitting and garter rows to determine gauge.
