In Stitches Hat
Stashbuster project alert! Pick a favourite, neutral main colour and go wild with leftovers from your stash for the contrast colours… there are so many combinations of colours you can use. Go monotone with only one contrast colour or use a different colour for every ‘stitched’ stripe.
This hat pattern comes in a beanie and a slouchy version and is an easy but satisfying pattern using slipped stitches for the colourwork so only one colour is worked per round.
Materials
Yarn
Rowan Felted Tweed
Main colour: 120 yards/110m (Beanie) or 154 yards/140m (Slouchy)
Contrast colour 1: 17 yards/15m or 20 yards/18m
Contrast colour 2: 14 yards/12m or 16 yards/14m
Contrast colour 3: 10 yards/9m or 12 yards/11m
Contrast colour 4: 10 yards/9m or 12 yards/11m
These amounts will give you 4 contrast colours as shown in the main sample.
Needles/Notions
3mm/US 2.5 circular needle at least 36” length for magic loop or same size double pointed needles
3.5mm/US 4 circular needle or dpns (length as above)
Tapestry needle
Stitch marker (optional)
Measurements and gauge
Gauge 26 sts and 35 rounds to 10cm/4” in slipped stitch pattern with larger needle.
Sizes S (M, L) to fit heads up to 51cm/20” (56cm/22”, 61cm/24”) circumference in both versions.
Beanie height: 19cm/7.5”
Slouchy height: 23cm/9”
NB Hat can be lengthened or shortened by either adding or deleting a colourwork section before decreasing for the crown. Please check row gauge as many substitute yarns knit up with less rounds per 10cm/4” which will result in your hat being longer than expected.
Pattern is fully written with a chart included for the colourwork sections.
