Overview

This is a fun little IU branded pint glass cozy to keep your hand warm and condensation off the table when drinking a cold drink while you cheer on the Hoosiers! If you aren’t on team Hoosier or would like an easier pattern to do, check out my base pint glass cozy pattern which is the same thing but done in a single color and just has the details for the expansion needed to fit the pint glass without all the pattern color changes which makes it a lot easier.

Note that this cozy will be a little tight on the glass at first, you might feel that you’re really squeezing it in there. But with some regular use, it will settle in and stretch out a bit so it’s better to have it tight when you first make it rather than too loose. If you don’t want to fuss with it the first few times you use it, leave it on a pint glass for a few days in a corner somewhere so it takes shape over the pint glass.

I’d rate this pattern at intermediate because the IU pattern is worked with a tapestry single crochet while catching the trailing yarn to hide it. So the stitches themselves aren’t difficult (just single crochet) but the color change and yarn catching can be a bit tricky at first if you aren’t used to it. You likely won’t reverse it because it will be fitted to a pint glass one way, but the back does look clean and there aren’t any pesky strands of yarn to catch when you insert a glass. That said, there are some mini tutorials included to hopefully help!

Pattern Details

This pattern includes the following:

  1. A tutorial on how to do the Tapestry stitch used to change colors.
  2. A tutorial on how I caught the yarn as you go so it’s hidden on the back.
  3. A detailed pattern with full descriptions to explain what should be done for each row.
  4. A shorthand pattern that really just focuses on the IU pattern and extensions if you’re already comfortable with changing colors and hiding yarn.

Material/Project Details

  1. There is just one size that fits a standard US pint glass. Finished it is 2.5 in (6.5cm) in diameter at the base, growing to 3.75 in (9cm) in diameter at the top, and 5 in (14cm) tall which leaves a bit of glass exposed at the top to drink from.
  2. You will need about 55m of red (I used wine red) and 25m of white.
  3. I used a 3.75mm hook which worked well, but the yarn suggested 3mm or 4mm so you should be able to go smaller if you want tighter stitches but you’ll need to adjust the pattern accordingly.
