Initial Sweater Ornament
This miniature sweater makes the perfect personalized gift! Whether you use them as Christmas ornaments, gift tags, party favors, hostess gifts, or something else, the recipient is sure to feel loved by this one-of-a-kind ornament. Each sweater should take only an hour or two to make, so you can knit a set for the entire family! You could even knit a whole pile of blank sweaters ahead
of time and keep them on hand for a quick personalized gift.
This pattern comes with a complete set of miniature letter charts so you can add any initial you want!
Because this is a fairly small item, you will be doing circular knitting with as little as 7 stitches at a time. Prior experience in knitting in the round is recommended; this is an intermediate level knitting pattern.
Materials Needed
- 13 yards (12 meters, or 7 grams) I Love This Yarn (or other worsted/aran/US size 4 yarn of
choice)
-
Small amount of scrap yarn of same weight (about 20-30 inches or 50-75 cm) in contrasting color for the initial and hanging loop
-
US size 6 (UK size 8) circular or double pointed needles
-
Two pieces of scrap yarn (about 6-8” or 15-20 cm long) for holding the sleeve stitches
-
Stitch marker (optional)
-
Tapestry needle (for making initial and weaving in yarn ends)
-
A note on yarn and needle size: this pattern is extremely flexible as to yarn and needle choice. If you make it as directed with worsted yarn, you will end up with an ornament approximately two inches (5 cm) tall. However, you’re welcome to choose a lighter or heavier weight yarn. Simply use the needle size recommended on the yarn label (or a size smaller for a tighter look) and continue on with the pattern. Your final result will be an ornament that is slightly smaller or larger than the example, but since this is an ornament and not a garment that needs to fit anyone, that’s totally fine!
Skills required
- knitting in the round (either with magic loop for circular needles, or using 3-4 double pointed needles)
- Placing stitches on scrap yarn holder
- Duplicate stitch (for the initial)
