For this hat I wanted to design something that was going to be easy to knit and somewhat a mindless activity while I was pregnant with my second child. I was very unwell during my second pregnancy and even though I wanted to knit I couldn’t focus my mind on anything more complicated than knitting stockinette in the round most of the time.

So this pattern was born. Lots and lots of plain stockinette knitting in the round. Not a single purl stitch in sight and no kitchener stitch to finish the project. This also makes it a great travel knitting project or something to just knit on to keep your hands busy when catching up with friends or other situations where you cannot always focus on a written pattern while knitting.

The provisional cast on at the beginning means that you essentially are knitting two hats that are joined at the cast on edge. So you start at what would traditionally be the brim with the provisional cast on and knit up and work your crown decreases as a typical hat. then you would pick up the provisional edge and knit in the opposite direction the same hat and working the crown decreases to finish.

Once one side is folded into the other you then have a fully reversible hat that can either be worn with a folded brim to make it more of a fitted beanie or without a folded brim to create a looser fitting slouchy hat.

What you will need:

• Yarn – 100-200g Fingering weight Yarn in two colours (approx. 400m/420 yds per 100g); Yarn used in sample – Seismic Yarns Butter Sock Base (85% superwash merino / 15% nylon) Colourways - We Will Rock You (Speckled Colour) and Tumble (Solid Colour)

Needles –3.5mm (US 4) 16” circular for knitting in the round or a longer cable for magic loop, also you may wish to use double pointed needles (DPNs) for working the crown decreases if not using magic loop.
