Insnowity
This winter in northern Wisconsin, we hit over 100” of snow! Since we have gotten all of this snow, I figure I could use a new pair of mittens! Thus, this pattern was born. I am calling it Insnowity because the snow is insane. I just took ‘insanity’ and put in snow!
The motif is stranded colorwork and creates four snowflakes (2 on each side). It is a very basic color work pattern, and should be good even for a beginner at color work. The only tricky part is doing the color work while on magic loop or double-pointed needles (dpn’s).
I knit my pair using magic loop. However, double-pointed needles (dpn’s) will also work.
You will need about 40 yards of color A and 80 yards of color B to knit these with the same gauge I had. If you have a different gauge, your mittens will be smaller or larger than mine. My hands have about a 7.5” circumference, and these fit perfectly, but the mittens can stretch to a little bit more than 7.75” if you have larger hands.
This pattern uses an afterthought thumb, so you don’t need to worry about increasing for a thumb.
I suggest using superwash yarn, or something that won’t felt. If your hands get too warm, your mittens might felt and muddle the color work pattern.
You will need:
a 40” US 8 (or size to get gauge) for magic loop, OR dpn’s.
40 yards of Color A and 80 yards of Color B in a worsted weight yarn (I used Malabrigo Rios in the colors of Aquamarine and Matisse Blue).
a darning needle.
a measuring tape.
a pair of scissors.
knowledge of how to knit (k), purl (p), knit 2 together (k2tog), pick up stitches, do a kitchener/three-needle bind-off (video links included in pattern), use magic loop/ dpn’s, and do stranded color work.
I pray that these help to keep your fingers nice and toasty! Thank you! God bless!
