Newly re-released in December 2015 in PDF format, for much easier knitting! It was originally released as a mystery knit-a-long via instagram - see below for details and links to the original posts.

This bulky weight hat is quick to make, and looks great in different kinds of yarns and styles, fitted snugly to the head, or slouchy and oversized.

The changing stitch pattern segments make it interesting enough to knit that you won’t get bored, and interesting enough to look at that it works well in plain solid colors as well as variegated or gradient-style colorful yarns.

The stitch patterns are made of simple decreases and yarn overs, a good level for adventurous beginner knitters ready to go further, or a quick and easy project for more advanced knitters wanting to whip up a hat.

As a holiday season treat in 2014, a condensed version of this patten was posted for free on social media as a mini-mystery-knit-a-long, beginning the day after Christmas, a holiday gift to my social media followers. The pattern continues to live on those instagram posts as a free pattern that anyone can still read and use :)

The paid PDF version for sale here includes more detailed sizing and sample information, extra notes/instructions for embellishment options, the pattern is written in an easier-to-follow standard pattern format, it was professionally tech edited, and new photos were taken for it.

You need a skein of bulky yarn (possibly more than 1 skein, for an extra big, slouchy hat), size US 10 1/2 (6.5mm) needles - a 16” circular for the hat body plus a few double points (or a long circular for magic loop), for the crown top.

Small{medium, large} are for circumference sizes. In the given gauge, they are snugly fit to these head sizes.

  • small: 21 inches / 53 cm head circumference
  • medium: 22.5 inches / 57 cm head circumference
  • large: 24 inches / 61 cm head circumference

The height is given in ranges; the shorter end of the range is for a fitted style hat, the longer end for a bigger, slouchy style hat.

You can pair any circumference with any height, to make a hat sized and styled to your liking.
