Instant Winter Socks (Cuff Down)
Create marled socks in custom colors using two strands of sock yarn. The perfect socks for cold feet, fast gifts, or impatient knitters. Plus, a fun solution to “buying too much sock yarn”. Great winter boot socks, and ideal for padding around the house on frosty mornings. Get started on a cozy project today!
These extra quick ribbed cuff-down socks feature a Strong heel (with optional contrast heel) and short-row toes. In 3 adult sizes with full written instructions, customization ideas, resizing guidelines, and a brief Kitchener stitch tutorial.
Toe up version also available.
Yarn: Knit with 2 strands of sock/ fingering weight yarn (yarn held double). Total will depend on length, two 100g skeins will be sufficient for most lengths.
Shown in: (C1) ”Lang Super Soxx Nature 4 Ply”, in “Plum”, and (C2) “Valley Yarns Huntington” in “Mustard”.
Or, try one self-striping & one solid strand, leftovers, or a single strand of DK yarn knit at the same gauge.
Gauge: In stockinette stitch: 22sts/ 4in, 22sts/ 10cm (5.5sts/ 1in).
In pattern: 22sts/ 4in, 22sts/ 10cm (5.5sts/ 1in).
Stockinette row gauge: 30 rows/ 4in, 30 rows/ 10cm (7.5 rows/ 1in).
Needles: In size needed to obtain gauge, I used US size 3/ 3.25mm. Pattern utilizes stitch counts and markers to adapt to your preferred needle configuration (DPN, magic loop, etc).
Notions: 3 stitch markers, tapestry needle, scissors.
Sizes: 3 adult sizes (by circumference), any length. Choose a size with about 1in/ 2.5cm of negative ease. 7in/ 18cm (shown), 8.5in/ 22cm, 10in/ 26cm. See “Customize” section for additional sizes/gauges.
Skills: knit, purl, knit in the rnd (using your preferred needle configuration such as: DPNs, magic loop, two-at-a-time, etc), slip stitches, M1 inc, SSK dec, K2tog dec, P2tog dec, long tail cast on (or your preferred stretchy cast on), work in pattern as established, short rows, wrap & turn, and Kitchener stitch (includes brief tutorial).
Accessibility Notes: Pattern features: 12 point san-serif font with bolded 14 point headings, no columns (except abbreviation key). Due to additional thickness & warmth, they may be particularly useful to those with circulatory problems (such as Raynauds). Also nice when reversed, if “princess soles” are preferred.
