The word intervale was once a common New England term to describe the fertile land alongside rivers, places where farming communities naturally evolved. The knit-purl pattern on this completely reversible cowl reminds me of the neat rows of crops in the Intervale in Burlington, Vermont, a hidden gem of the city filled with wonderful community-supported farms. This Intervale wraps you in lightweight warmth and takes only 400 yards (100 grams) of sock yarn (it’s delicious in Malabrigo Finito).

Finished size is approximately 46 inches (117 cm) in circumference and 7 inches (18cm) tall before blocking; approximately 52 inches (132 cm) by 6 inches (15 cm) after blocking. Gauge is not critical for this project because Intervale will look great if it’s a bit larger or smaller, but your yardage may vary if you do not match the gauge of the pattern.

This project is simple enough for a beginner who knows how to cast on, bind off, and work knit and purl stitches in the round.

It’s also easy to substitute different yarn weights for a different look: just make a gauge swatch to alter your number of stitches to cast on (keep to a multiple of eight). If you use a different weight of yarn at a different gauge, your yardage will vary.
