This headband is designed to go with my Intrepid Mitts so you can use the headband to practise your cables. The mitt pattern contains a code to download the Headband free and you can make the mitts and headband from one 200m (220y) skein of yarn.

As a standalone pattern, it’s a great way to use up a small amount of worsted weight yarn.

Size: one size, to suit average woman’s head: 56 cm/22 in. Finished circumference before blocking is approx 48cm/19 in. Size can be adjusted.

Needle size: 3.75mm (US 5) needles, or size to obtain gauge. The headband is knitted flat. You can use straight needles, dpns or a short circular needle.

Gauge: 10 st = 3 cm in k2, p2, rib unstretched; and 15 rows = 5cm. Note that differences in row gauge will affect the finished size of the headband.

Supplies: Approx 17g Cat and Sparrow YOY yarn or any heavy dk/light worsted weight yarn that meets your gauge. You will also need a cable needle, 2 stitchmarkers, waste yarn, a yarn needle and a crochet hook for the provisional cast on.

Construction: The headband starts with a provisional cast on. First you work a narrow rib band which sits under the hair without being bulky. Stitches are increased to the full width for the main cabled section, then decreased again before the matching narrow rib band is worked for the other side. It is finished by grafting the two ends together.
