Intrepid Mitts
Intrepid: (adj) fearless, adventurous.
Are you ready for adventure? Ready to try a new skill? While the cable pattern on these mitts looks complicated, there are only 6 cable rows for each mitt! Be brave. Be intrepid. Try cables. You know you want to.
The pattern for these mitts is suitable for magic loop or DPNs and suits a confident beginner who wants to try cables or an experienced knitter looking for a little fun. With long cuffs and plenty of finger coverage, you’ll want to wear them on all your daily adventures.
This pattern is a collaboration with Cat and Sparrow Australia for her YOY yarn. YOY is milled using 50% mill waste, reducing landfill. The pattern is available to purchase as a standalone pattern, but if you’d like to use the same yarn as my sample, Cat and Sparrow has pattern and yarn kits available at https://www.catandsparrow.com.au/shop/p/intrepid-mitts-pattern-yarn-kit-plus-free-headband-pattern
Sizes: adult small (18-19 cm/7-7.5 in), adult medium (19-20 cm/7.5-8 inches) and adult large (20-21 cm/7.5-8 inches). The finished mitts are 29.5 cm/11.5 in long and the hand is 15 cm/6 in long from wrist to top for all sizes. Instructions are given for how to shorten the cuff and/or hand if desired.
The mitt pattern includes a code for the matching headband that you can make to practise your gauge and cables and to make the most of a special skein of yarn.
Gauge: 11.5 st and 15 rows to 5 cm (2 inches) in the round, in stocking stitch, unblocked. Please note that differences in gauge will affect both the size of mitts and your yarn usage.
Supplies:
• 1 skein of Cat and Sparrow YOY (200m/220y per 100g/3.5oz). This can be substituted with heavy dk/worsted weight yarn of similar metreage that knits to gauge. The sample was knit in size M.
• 3.5mm (US 6) and 3.75mm (US 5). Needles sizes are just a recommendation. Change needle size if required to meet the stated gauge.
• Cable needle.
• Large sewing up needle.
• Waste yarn.
• 5 stitch markers.
