Wherever we go my mom and I have to find a yarn or a local craft shop. It’s fun to find new brands and see what the local community interests are. Many times the personalities of the shop owners are reflected in their products and displays. In Kensington Market, Toronto, Canada we found a yarn store called Yarns Untangled. The shop is quaint, lively and artsy like the rest of the area. (To me it’s like St.Mark’s Place in New York, where bohemian creativity and commerce thrive.) There I was inspired by the brand Lichen & Lace, which is a single ply yarn made from Canadian wool. I loved the natural dye palette of the yarns and that it was grown by native sheep. The yarn is rustic and a little rough on its own, but paired with a strand of mohair softens the overall look and feel of the knit fabric. I couldn’t decide if I wanted to create lace or cables with this yarn, and took a page from Kensington Market. Add a little bit of everything. This ended with a unique combination of both cables and lace in a button up cowl.
