Named after my maternal Grandmother, who lived to the age of 99, Irene is a crochet shawl which forms an elongated, winged triangle shape, with a central spine which runs most of the way down the back, and is worked from the top down.

It features a variety of lace patterns, with a combination of solid areas and other more openwork sections, finishing with a decorative hem edging.

There are two versions, the standard laceweight being slightly smaller, and the fine laceweight incorporating additional sections of pattern. Either version can be worked from a single 100g skein of yarn.

(The design could also be worked in a thicker yarn, eg 4-ply, but this would require extra yarn.)

Designed to be quite challenging and interesting to work, the pattern changes throughout the shawl. This design is therefore classed as intermediate to advanced and recommended for those with a reasonable level of experience.
