Description

Iris is a semi-circular shawl with a lace center and a multi-color Brioche border. It drapes over the shoulders as a cape and is the perfect light layer for spring and summer evenings.

Yarn

Sample uses Botanical Yarn Sock 4ply (fingering weight ; 75% superwash merino, 25% nylon), 425m / 465 yds per 100gr, in the following colors:

Lace center: 100 gr or 1 full skein in the color Cotelydon Undulata (light grey
Brioche border: 200 gr of yarn, I used a set of 10 mini skeins at 20gr per skein, in the ‘Purple to Burgundy’ fade. As noted in the pattern I start with the dark purple, working my way to the burgundy.

Or a total of 300 gr of similarly weight yarn. For the border you can also use leftovers or fewer colors, go wild!

Finished Measurements

Size: one size
Finished measurements: Take these numbers as guides, not absolute measurements as the shawl can stretch a lot during blocking and wear.
Wingspan: 170 cm / 67”

Gauge

On 3.25mm / US 3 size needles over 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4” flat, after blocking:
Lace stitch: 25 sts x 43 rows
Brioche stitch: 25 sts x 32 rows
Gauge isn’t super important for this shawl, just focus on creating a fabric density that you like. Just note that if you have a different gauge it might influence your yardage and you might need additional yarn.

Needles

3.25mm / US 3 size needles. Cord length is knitters preference, but I recommend at least a length of 100 cm / 40”.

Notions

Tapestry needle for weaving in ends, 2 stitch markers.

Techniques

knit and purl stitches, basic increases and decreases, Brioche stitch
