Irish Aran knitting patterns have a long and rich history, originating in the Aran Islands, off the west coast of Ireland. Most commonly seen in sweaters, I have replicated those patterns here in blanket form. The Irish Aran Diamond and Honeycomb Blanket design is a mixed pattern of braided cables, honeycomb and intricately woven diamonds. Each pattern within an Irish Aran knit design holds meaning: the diamond stitch is said to symbolize the small farmer’s fields on the islands, or sometimes fisherman’s nets. The honeycomb pattern is said to symbolize bees, which in turn represent, hard work, reward, and good luck.

SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate.

SUGGESTED MATERIALS: 9 balls of Lion Brand Off-The-Hook Yarn (3.5 oz/100g (Image shown is the colour ‘Beach Sand’).

SUGGESTED TOOLS: No needles required (finger knitting). Scissors.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: Approx. 44” by 44” (111.5 cm by 111.5 cm).

PLEASE NOTE: This pattern will work with any brand of loop yarn, but keep in mind that the size of the loops, and size of the balls/skeins of each brand is different.

Lion Brand Off-The-Hook, Lion Brand Crayola Off-The-Hook, and Red Heart Loop-It yarns can all be used with this pattern as is and will yield a blanket of approximately the same same size.

If you use Bernat Alize Blanket-EZ yarn, the loops are larger, so the blanket will be larger; and because the balls are larger (6.4 oz/180g), only 5-6 balls should be needed.
