Likely any DK weight will do - this is just the one I used to experiment with the pattern.

Hat knit from the top down.

For smaller band, choose either to decrease amount of stitches for band, or use smaller needle when creating it.

Useful items: stitch markers to differentiate between pattern repeats, and for end of row.
