CONSTRUCTION
The balaclava is knitted bottom up in stockinette. A few rows are knitted in the round before making a fold by knitting the cast on row together with the stitches on your needles. The neck part of the balaclava is knitted in the round. Stitches are then put on hold and and an opening is made for the face. The balaclava is now knitted flat, while decreasing at each side of the opening. After the decreases, the balaclava is knitted flat. Short rows are made to shape the back of the balaclava, before sewing together using kitchener stitch. The opening is finished by picking up stitches and making a similar edge to the beginning. Lastly, an i-cord is knitted and threaded through the opening of the balaclava.
The mittens are knitted bottom up. A few rows are knitted in the round before making a fold by knitting the cast on row together with the stitches on your needles. More rows are knitted in stockinette before setting aside and casting on stitches for the thumb. The work is continued in the round and short rows are made to shape the tip, before sewing together using kitchener stitch. Stitches for the thumb are picked up, and knitted similarly to the tip of the mitten.
