Yarn
You can use any yarn you like for this pattern and a hook that suits your yarn, yarn stats and sizes given here are suited for DK weight yarn.
I made the original Islands blanket using the wonderful SAGA WOOL from Icewear Garn. This yarn is a DK weight, 100% wool that comes in 50 g = 100 m skeins.
For the Medium sized Islands blanket shown here (100 x 140 cm), you will need:
16 x 50 g skeins of color A
6 x 50 g skeins color B
Border:
5 skeins color B & 1 skein color A
For the Small sized Islands blanket (70 x 85 cm) you will need:
7 skeins color A & 3 skeins color B
Border:
3 skeins color B & 1 skeins color A
For the Large sized Islands blanket (140 x 170 cm) you will need:
28 skeins color A & 10 skeins color B
Border:
10 skeins color B & 2 skeins color A
Hooks:
If using the recommend yarn and hook here, you will need a 4.5 mm hook for the body of the blanket and a 4 mm hook for the border.
I generally use a 4 mm hook for DK and would then go down to 3.5 for the border, but for this project I wanted a bit of a looser gauge, since the pattern is so minimalistic. Do please make a sample and check your gauge though. It’s fine to go down in hook size if you like, then you’re blanket will just be slightly smaller.
Gauge
Approx. 17 ST & 17 rows = 10 cm (4 inches)
Using recommended DK yarn and a 4.5 mm hook in a basic mosaic stitch. Do note that the gauge here is not so important if making a blanket.
Abbreviations (US terms)
