Iteration is a hexagonal shawl with 2x2 ribbing details. It’s knit at a light, airy gauge in soft singles yarn.

Although it has an unusual shaping and uses a modern approach to the idea of a garter tab shawl-beginning, the project itself is overwhelmingly simple. Apart from the increases, it’s all basic knit + purl for texture. Knit it as written in fingering-weight yarn, or size up by adding another skein of yarn (at least) and a fourth repeat—or just switch up to DK-weight and follow as written.

Iteration is a smallish shawl as shown, but its shaping makes it flexible: wear it bunched up as a scarf, fully unfurled as a wrap, folded horizontally for a more basic shallow triangle, or manipulate the corners for a kerchief/triangle shawl look.

Materials:

• 760-840yds of Malabrigo Yarn Mechita, or similar; sample shown in Mechita in Pearl colorway
• 1 40”+circular needle in US7/4.5, or size needed for gauge
• Optional: DPNs or 16” circular in size needed for gauge
• 6 removable stitch markers or scrap yarn
• Tapestry needle.

Gauge:
Gauge is an airy 4 sts and 8 rows over 1“/2.54cm in garter stitch, taken from the shawl body. (Gauge for the tab was 5 sts and 10 rows over 1”/2.54cm, but somewhat distorted by later shaping.) For best results, keep in mind that needle sizes are just a suggestion, and please be sure to check your gauge.

Measurements/Sizes:
As shown, this shawl measures about 42“/1.06m long, 38“/.96m deep at its deepest point, and 22“/56cm deep on the shallower ends.

Techniques:
Work is briefly flat, and then in the round; you’ll also need to be comfortable picking up stitches and working increases.
