“We can’t choose the disease, but we CAN choose hope,” wrote knitter and designer Annie Modesitt. My hope is that someday soon when Parkinson’s Disease is mentioned, someone will ask, “What’s Parkinson’s?”
Parkinson’s disease touches all cultures, all races, and all genders. It is a progressive disorder of the central nervous system, including tremor, rigidity or stiffness, akinesia or lack of movement, bradykinesia or slowness, impaired balance, and later, a shuffling gait. Parkinson’s disease is the most common long-term degenerative disorder and is the second most common progressive neurodegenerative disorder after Alzheimer’s disease. There is no cure yet, but treatments for symptoms are improving. Although Parkinson’s disease appears to have been a notable malady long, long ago, the disease was named after the English doctor James Parkinson, who published the first detailed description in “An Essay on the Shaking Palsy” in 1817.
