Jacob's Coaster
On Christmas day, as I was hanging out with family, an idea struck me. I have been playing with Jacob’s Ladders for years now, and had often thought it would be neat to be able to do them horizontally. That festive day, how to do Jacob’s Ladders horizontally hit me. My family was quite understanding about my need, first to sketch, and then to grab some yarn and try it out.
A member of my Ravelry group suggested that it could make a really neat coaster pattern, and so, here we are.
This pattern is a quick, and hopefully fun way to learn how to do Jacob’s Ladders horizontally while making something that is quite functional.
One fun, accidental, feature this coaster has is that if you size it well, it will hug the bottom of a wine glass. You could make them in different colours and use them as combination coaster/wine charm.
Watch for more patterns using this technique in the future!
This is not a beginner pattern.
There is a photo tutorial for how to do the ladder round.
There is a pattern for two sizes of coasters, and each one has an optional last round. At my gauge, I got a range of sizes from 4” to 5.5” depending on which combination I did.
This pattern was tested for colour blind accessibility by https://www.color-blindness.com/coblis-color-blindness-si... It will also still make sense when printed in the black/white setting on your printer.
About the pictures: The blue/white coaster is the smaller pattern including the optional last round. The red/fire colours coaster is the larger pattern including the optional last round. The blue/white coaster travels with the wine glass if you tuck the bottom of the glass under the sides of the ladder.
