The Jacob’s Walk Hat
This hat utilizes the simple technique of working stitches in only one colour each row and slipping the rest, whilst achieving a strong graphic look in high contrast colours or a more muted look with lower contrast colours, but only ever working with one strand of working yarn at a time, producing a colour work look the easy way!
The result will be a striking looking cosy hat. The matching Jacob’s Walk Cowl as pictured here is also available.
Knitting skills & techniques used:
Intermediate: Casting on, binding off, knitting, slipping stitches purlwise, and working Left Twist stitches for the ribbing detail. Also, K2togther & Slip Slip Knit decreases are used to form the crown decreases.
Materials:
The following yarn usage amount is an approximate guide and is in fact a little over the actual amount I used, as I add around 10% to the amounts as a buffer in view of differences between knitters gauge and such, and so as to give you a few grams room:
Requires approx. 143 yards / 131 metres DK weight yarn. For the Sample I used:
West Yorkshire Spinners Jacob DK, 100g, 246 yards (225 meters)
Yarn A: Brown Black, 74 yards / 68 meters
Yarn B: Light Grey, 69 yards / 63 meters
Needles: 5mm / US 8 (16 Inch / 40 cm circular needles can be used).
Notions: stitch markers, cable needle / DPN, tapestry needle / crochet hook to weave ends
Gauge: 4” (10 cm) on 5 mm/US 8 needles (after blocking). 22 sts & 30 rounds pattern stitch. The pattern stitch is 16 stitches over 30 rounds (I would suggest casting on at least 32 stitches - 2 repeats therefore, divided by a marker, to have enough to measure). This can be found on page 2, rounds 1 – 30 of ‘Main Section’ of the chart / written instructions, x1.
Incorrect Gauge can affect finished measurements / yarn usage.
Finished measurements & relating notes:
Circumference Brim: 10” / 25cm lying flat
Fits a 23” / 59cm head circumference.
This can be adjusted as explained at point of cast on.
Total Length: 8.5” / 22cm
Length before crown decreases:
6.5”/ 17cm from cast on edge (so including the ribbing)
but this is adjustable by adding extra pattern repeats.
If you want a result with more slouch, measure the length of each repeat of ‘Main Section’ Rounds 1 - 30 within your work, to give you an idea for helping you decide if you want to add a further repeat according to your preference for example before starting your Crown decreases. (All of this is explained at that point- ‘Slouch’ Note on page 4 - in the pattern to remind you)
Also you can download the file titled ‘Start Crown Decreases early’ for instructions to start crown decreases early, halfway through the 2nd repeat of the chart, available as part of the files downloadable once you make your purchase.
