Inspired by the Chinese Year of the Tiger, this cardigan features wide bands of mosaic-knit tiger stripes around the hem and cuffs. It is worked in the round as a pullover, and then steeked to create the front opening edges.

Mosaic knitting, created by Barbara Walker, is a fun and easy alternative to stranded knitting, because only one color of yarn is used on each round; stitches of the other color are slipped.

Skill level: Complex; skills include mosaic knitting, reading charts, working in the round, increasing and decreasing, raglan decreasing and short rows worked simultaneously, grafting underarm sts, sewing and cutting a steek, picking up stitches for front bands, 3-needle bind-off to join the front bands with their facings, and knitted buttonholes. Instructions are also given for working the Jadwin Cardigan as a pullover, which eliminates the steek and front bands.

Needles
Main: US size 6/4 mm: 24-47” (cir), round, depending on selected garment size, for Body, and preferred style for small circumference knitting, for sleeves.
Ribbing: US size 4/3.5 mm (two sizes smaller than Main needles): 24-47” cir, depending on selected garment size, for hem and front band ribbing, and preferred style for small circumference knitting in the round, for cuff and neck ribbing.
Facing: US size 3/3.25 mm (three sizes smaller than Main needles): 24” or longer cir for front band facings.
Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions Markers; removable markers; row counter; stitch holders; tapestry needle; crochet hook, size D-3/3.25 mm; six 5/8”/15 mm buttons.

A sewing machine is used to stabilize the steek stitches before cutting.

Notes
The Jadwin Cardigan is slightly cropped in length, intended to end several inches above the fullest part of the hips. The Body is worked in the round from the bottom up to the armholes, including a section of steek stitches at center front. Sleeves are worked separately in the round, and then joined with the Body to work the yoke in the round. Machine sewing is used to stabilize the steek stitches, and then the steek is cut up the middle to create the front cardigan opening. Front bands are added during finishing.
