Jagged Little Socks – a homage to Alanis Morrisette. When I first put pen to paper on this design, the name came to me instantly, with it’s bold, spiky, two-tone colourwork motif: it just had to be. The striking repeats make this design such a pleasurable project to knit; a pattern that will be perfect for those new to sock knitting, colourwork or both, as well as those who have many a pair of woolly socks to keep their feet warm.

Pattern includes full written instructions for an afterthought heel (including my method on how to avoid those pesky gusset gaps holes) and grafting toes and heels closed using Kitchener stitch.

Construction
Knit top down from cuff to toe, in two colours, using a two-stranded colourwork knitting technique, with a wedge toe and an afterthought heel, using Kitchener stitch to close the heel and toe.

Sizes
Available in 4 sizes:
Adult Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large

Measurements
Circumference:
Approximate 18cm/7”, 19cm/7.5”, 21cm/8.25”, 24cm/9.5”
Length:
Shortie socks: Total sock length approx. 23 (25, 28, 30) cm/ 9 (9.75, 11, 11.25) inches.
Regular socks: Total sock length approx. 33 (37, 43, 47) cm/ 13 (14.5, 17, 18.5) inches).

Measurements within the pattern are given in both metric and imperial.

Sizing
To determine the most appropriate sock size to knit, measure the circumference of your foot at the widest part. It is always best to have 1-3cm negative ease when knitting socks to ensure a close fit. My foot circumference is 23cm, so I knit the size Adult M. Sizing instructions are given for both average measurements as well as how to get a more accurate/personalised measurement for leg and foot length including the placement of the afterthought heel.

Yarn
4ply/fingering weight sock yarn in 2 colours. Samples knit in Filcolana Arwetta Classic (210m/50g).
Shortie length sample knit in:
Pair - MC Peacock and CC Hibiscus
Single sock - MC Thistle Flower and CC Disco Green
Regular length sample knit in:
Pair - MC Natural White and CC Blue Stoll
Single Sock - MC Deep Ultramarine and CC Chock Orange

Scrappy socks knit in a mixture of 3ply and 4ply sock yarns.

Yardage
Shortie socks:
MC approx. – 68 (106, 104, 149) m / 75 (116, 113, 163) yds.
CC approx. – 100 (92, 141, 132) m / 109 (101, 154, 144) yds.
Regular Socks:
MC approx. – 149 (145, 223, 218) m / 163 (159, 243, 238) yds
CC approx. – 73 (131, 131, 201) m / 80 (143, 131, 220) yds

A pair of the shortie length socks in any size can be made from 1x50g ball of MC and 1x50g ball of CC of Filcolana Arwetta Classic. For a pair of the regular length socks you will require 1 (1, 2, 2) x50g ball of MC and 1 (1, 1, 1) x50g ball of CC Filcolana Arwetta Classic.

If you require a longer sock than the given measurements, please allow for this in your yardage requirements.

Needles
2.25mm and 2.5mm, 23cm/9inch and 2.25mm and 2.5mm 100cm/40inch circular needles (or needles to obtain gauge).

Gauge
32sts x 41 rounds = 10x10cm / 4x4 inches in charted stockinette stitch in the round, blocked.

Notions
2 ring and 2 locking stitch markers, scissors, tapestry needle

Skills Used
Cast on, ribbing, stranded colourwork, ssk/k2tog decreasing, afterthought heel, kitchener stitch (full written instructions given), picking up stitches.

During the development of this pattern, it soon became clear that this design would lend itself beautifully to scrappy sock knitting, either using 10g minis or those tiny little scraps left in the bottom of you project bag that you just can’t bare to part with. So, please find at the very bottom of the pattern a very useful table to help you calculate the average weights/yardages you will need for some super scrappy Jagged Little Socks.
