The Jagged Stripes pattern is intended to be a one year long project, where you work one stripe per day depending on the day’s temperatures. It can be worked as either a shawl/stole or a blanket, depending on how much time you want to spend.

To add a bit more interest to a very basic garter stitch project, a section with zig-zag stripes is added for about half of the shawl or blanket width. The zig-zag section is shaped using increases and decreases on every row.

You can choose to keep the “raw” edge of the zig-zag section, or work short row triangles at the beginning and end of the blanket. Instructions for both are included. Along the sides of the blanket, an i-cord edging is worked simultaneously with the striping to create a pretty edge – and as a bonus, to hide all the yarn ends. You can choose to add an applied i-cord to the top and bottom of the blanket afterwards, if you wish.

I’ve used a DK weight yarn for the blanket I’m making in 2018. However, any yarn weight can be used really! Just make a small gauge swatch in your chosen yarn and needles, enter your gauge information, and follow the numbers given in the spreadsheet.

Yarn: Knitter’s Kitchen Merino/Nylon DK (75% Merino, 25% Nylon), 225 meters / 247 yards per 100g.
Total approximate meterage/yardage needed: 800 [2400] meters / 880 [2640] yards.
Colorways depend on the colors you choose to go with the temperatures, and thus it is also hard to give a specific amount of each color needed. However, it isn’t strictly necessary to have the same dye lots of each color, so just start out with one skein of each color you expect to use!

Needles: 4 mm / US 6 circulars, at least 80 cm / 32 inches to accommodate a large number of sts.

Other: 6 [8] stitch markers. Tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

Gauge: Not crucial (but gauge might affect required yardage and final size). In the accompanying spreadsheet, you can calculate size based on your own gauge.
Sample uses gauge of 20 sts & 40 rows to 10 cm / 4 inches in garter stitch.
